District Heating

District heating (heat networks) is the concept of one large centralised boiler instead of individual boilers. Heat is then transported via pre-insulated district heating pipes into each building. REHAU offer 2 pre-insulated pipes:

RAUVITHERM is the only PE-Xa district heating pipe manufactured in the UK which saves an estimated 29% on CO² emissions. Ideal for district heating, biomass, biogas and heat pump applications.  Available in UNO 25-125mm and DUO 25-63mm.

RAUTHERMEX offers huge advantages over traditional steel pipework due to the speed and ease of installation. The high performance PU foam makes it ideal for large district heating over long distances where heat losses are critical.  Available in UNO 25-160mm and DUO 20-75mm.

RAUTITAN plumbing system  is a universal system for drinking water and heating, RAUTITAN is the first choice for modern installations and consists of pipe, fitting and a compression sleeve that creates a permanently sealed joint. Sub-surface Heating & Cooling

REHAU offer a number of solutions for sub-surface heating and cooling, from domestic systems to industrial and commercial solutions. Our offering for the commercial market includes our Chilled ceiling and TABS (Thermally Activated Building Structures) solution for buildings.

Heating & Plumbing          

REHAU offers RAUTITAN, comprising Flex and Stabil polymer pipes, a new universal 10 bar pipework solution designed specifically for drinking water and heating systems. The flexible PE-Xa RAUTITAN pipework system delivers on durability, corrosion resistance and ease of installation, and is available in both coils and straights, and also as a pre-insulated pipe system, offering installers a solution for virtually every application. The Flex range, a five layer polymer pipe, is available from 16-63mm and the multilayer Stabil pipe range is available from 16-40mm.

REHAU has recently launched a new acoustic drainage pipe to the portfolio – RAUPIANO. RAUPIANO Plus pipes feature a unique multi-layer composition which reduces noise without the need for additional pipe lagging (17dB sound level). The pipe’s inner layer is made of polypropylene (PP) and is designed to be abrasion resistant and low friction to reduce blockages and extend life span; the middle layer is made of mineral-reinforced PP for sound absorption and stability; and the outer PP layer is impact resistant, shockproof and UV/weather resistant.

Rehau High rise fire safety prioritised with new pipework

With recent regulations mandating more fire safety precautions be put in place around building services, a polymer specialist has released a Class B fire rated pre-insulated pipework solution for quick installation in high rise buildings.

Following previous developments such as the 2018 Hackitt Review and the Government’s July announcement of legislation appointing a new regulator for safety in buildings, there is even more emphasis on building compliance from developers and contractors. Alongside this, the challenge of delivering these projects to tight deadlines remains so products that save time on site are in high demand from contractors.

With focus now on buildings being specified and completed to high safety standards, Steve Richmond, Head of Marketing and Technical – Building Solutions at REHAU outlines how contractors and specifiers can use plumbing solutions to ensure projects are fully compliant.

Steve says: “The recently updated legislation is obviously a great improvement for the safety of building occupants. However, with pressure on contractors and specifiers to complete buildings within shrinking timeframes, the industry has been calling for pipework solutions that fulfil all the requirements. Yet alongside adhering to the Class B fire rating, and meeting BS EN13501-1 directive around fire classification of construction projects and building elements, any solution must also remain quick and easy to install.”

The new version of REHAU’s RAUTITAN stabil plumbing and heating pipework has been designed to meets these standards, as it is pre-insulated with Class B rated fire insulation, saving contractors the time-intensive process of manually adding insulation to pipework. RAUTITAN stabil uses the renowned Everloc compression sleeve fitting, which allows visual inspection thanks to it not needing O-rings, further saving time on installation.

On top of increased fire safety and quick installation, the RAUTITAN range also provides contractors and specifiers with a hygienic drinking water solution. Lead-free fittings and cavity-free joints mean microbial contamination is avoided which means contractors and specifiers can promote the health and wellbeing of occupants.

REHAU: RESPONSE TO SIXTH CARBON BUDGET

The Sixth Carbon Budget, required under the Climate Change Act, provides ministers with advice on the volume of greenhouse gases the UK can emit during the period 2033-2037. The Sixth Carbon Budget report is based on an extensive programme of analysis, consultation and consideration by the Committee on Climate Change and its staff, building on the evidence published last year concerning the UK’s progress toward Net Zero carbon emissions.

Comment from Steve Richmond, Head of Marketing and Technical for REHAU Building Solutions:

“The clouds are starting to part as we near the end of 2020 for many reasons, not least because of today’s announcement relating to the sixth carbon budget from the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) – particularly section two of the report, relating to buildings.

“REHAU most welcomes the specific focus on scaling up the market for heat pumps as a critical technology for decarbonising space heating, while maintaining quality. Additionally, expanding the rollout of low-carbon heat networks in heat dense areas like cities, using anchor loads such as hospitals and schools, is news to be celebrated.

“The roadmap of recommended dates demonstrate we need to move at pace. For example, all new build homes to have a heat pump or low carbon heat network and all new district heat connections to be low carbon by 2025. Heat pump sales must then be reaching 1m by 2030 with 5.5m heat pumps installed.

“We know these are viable technologies, but to see this advocated in black and white within the CCC’s official recommendations is exactly the sort of clarity we need. This follows the Government announcing its specific aim to install 600,000 heat pumps annually by 2028 last month, which was also a very encouraging sign.

“It is clear that the public and industry are behind moving towards zero carbon but there needs to be increased public awareness of how this can be achieved. One of the major challenges lies around skills, as the existing workforce may not possess all the skills necessary for operating low-carbon and low-flow temperature installations. It’s key that the Government now address these policy gaps and review what incentives may be needed to meet their green targets.

“Both sustainability and knowledge-sharing are driving forces within REHAU's own strategy, which is why we back these initiatives whole-heartedly. Our continuing professional development (CPD) programme has been a huge focus throughout this turbulent year, and is being revamped and expanded for 2021 with renewable technologies remaining at its heart. We believe this guidance is invaluable to the educational process.

“In summary, there can be little doubt that ambitious targets like net zero challenge industry to do more, and this report really does help visualise the practical steps to be taken.”
